Hamburger steak should be on everybody’s weekly dinner lineup. The hamburger steak is super tender and the onion gravy is so simple yet seasoned just right.
Prep time: 15 minutes
Cook time: 20 to 30 minutes
Serves: 6 to 8
Ingredients:
Hamburger patties:
- 3 T of cooking oil
- 3 T. Butter
- 2 lbs. of ground burger
- 1 small onion, finely chopped
- 2 large egg
- 1 tsp. salt and pepper
- 1 tsp. garlic powder
- About 2/3 cup of all purpose flour, for dipping the patties
Gravy
- 1 large sweet onion, sliced (about 3 cups)
- 2 C. of beef broth
- 1/4 cup of all purpose flour
- Salt and pepper to taste
- 1 T. of Worcestershire sauce
- 2 cups of sliced mushrooms, optional
What to do:
In a medium sized bowl, combine the ground burger, onion, egg, salt and pepper and garlic. Shape into 8 equal sized patties. I use a 1/2 cup measuring cup for equal amounts. Dip each patty into the flour, set aside. In a large skillet over medium high heat add your oil and butter. Once butter is melted and oil is hot cook your patties until browned on both sides; remove and set aside.
Add the sliced onions and mushrooms if using to the skillet, and cook over medium heat until lightly caramelized, stirring regularly. In a separate bowl whisk together the beef broth, 1/4 cup of flour, salt, pepper, and the Worcestershire until well combined. Pour into the skillet with the onions and mushrooms, stir constantly, until mixture begins to thicken.
Return the burger patties to the skillet, turn to coat, and reduce heat to a low simmer. Cover and cook, for about 15-20 minutes or until patties are done. Serve with mashed potatoes, mashed cauliflower, rice, cauliflower rice, noodles etc.
